What is a Digital Marketing Strategy? The 7 Pillars of 2021

What is Digital Marketing Strategy?

Learning how to sell smart and build trust with a Digital Marketing Strategy includes seven pillars.

Digital Marketing Strategy Roadmap

Inbound marketing is built within a digital marketing strategy for today's markets that builds a foundation of trust and open communication between the seller/business and the buyer/client with seven pillars.

Do you cringe when your phone rings and the caller ID is SPAM?

Telemarketing is a type of marketing that is most referred to as annoying but the real definition is outbound marketing. The goal is to interrupt and grab a person's attention.

This type of marketing includes popup ads on social media or commercials on television. The commercials or ads can be loud and flashy. Once upon a time accompanying jingles would stick in your head like glue.

The thought process behind this method was to influence buyers subconsciously.

But does it really work?

Inbound marketing or Permission marketing takes into account a potential client or consumer's preferences, needs, and stressors.

Inbound marketing is built within a digital marketing strategy for today's markets.

Its foundation builds trust and open communication between the seller/business and the buyer/client.

Today we are starting a new series and we will be learning how to sell smart and build trust with a Digital Marketing Strategy.

Digital Marketing Starts Here: Who are you?

Learning how to sell smart and build trust with a Digital Marketing Strategy includes seven pillars.

Called the Seven P Formula by Entrepreneur Magazine, these are Product, Price, Promotion, Place, Packaging, Positioning, and People.

We are going to discuss our seven today.

We'll start with who you are.

Any successful business needs to know who they are. This may seem elementary but you would be surprised at how many business owners have an identity crisis.

Let's take a shoe store for instance. There are many but every shoe store is different. Think of the types of shoes sold, athletic, specialty dance shoes, women's shoes, work boots, there's a lot of different types of shoes.

A store specializing in a certain type of shoe, say cowboy boots, can often sell these for a higher price simply because they have a limited selection but offer the best in quality.

Most shoe stores that carry many types have lower prices but at the same time, usually don't carry those special sports cleats that your child needs.

This business creates a certain expectation by defining what type of shoes it carries. People automatically go to this store for all their sporting shoe needs.

This is what you need to do for your business. What is it that makes you different? Define your business by being clear, concise, and compressed.

Next Step to Digital Marketing Strategy: Why you exist?

Once you have a clear definition of your business, the next pillar is to decide why you exist. With our example above, we can determine that a sports shoe store exists to provide premium footwear for those serious about sports.

This store will have shoes for various types of sports but their ultimate goal is to provide a place for athletics who are serious about what they do.

This brings us to our next pillar.

The Most Important Part of Digital Marketing: Who do you serve?

A business is a place to serve other's needs, solve their problems, make life a little easier. Have you nailed down the type of customer or client you serve?

We call this the target market. Just as you imagine, a target market is like an archery ring with a bullseye. The closer to the center you get, the better.

By defining your target market, who you serve, you will connect with those you can best serve.

Digital Marketing is All About: How do you serve your customers/clients?

Digital Marketing is All About: How do you serve your customers/clients?

Ok, now we are getting somewhere. We've talked about who you are, why you exist, who you serve and now we need to touch on how.

Let's go back to our shoe store. In passing, customers will clearly see that the store sells shoes, and most will be able to connect that they are limited to sports.

Diving deeper into the needs of your clients, you can pick up on what problems you can help solve for them.

What is this particular shoe store was able to provide specialists that could assist parents with first-time athletics? They knew what the parents needed even if the parents didn't.

They could walk them through the process and answer all their questions.

This store isn't just providing footwear for sports but a community of experts.

Digital Marketing Localize: Where do you serve?

We mentioned the community above and let's talk about that. In an earlier post, How to Set Up Google My Business,  we provided the data from the 2020 State of Marketing Report that a whopping 88% of local consumers used a Google search to make a purchase the same day of the search.

What that means is you need to include your community within a digital marketing strategy. Your business needs an SEO (Search Engine Optimization) that includes your location, hours, and listing of goods and services.

Your social media should interact with local community groups, especially on Facebook.

All of this should be taken into consideration when you are developing a Digital Marketing Strategy.

Now: How do you sell?

How you sell is more than deciding if you have a storefront or delivery of services or goods, it's about the type of business atmosphere you provide, how you back your services or goods, how you package them, and the brand you create.

Having a strategy in place can lower your risks, give you an edge over your competitors, and create an opportunity for your business to become experts in your field, the go-to for whatever your business is about.

Why should anyone choose you?

We touched on this in our first pillar but we need to hone in on what makes you different from the competition.

Your business has a product or service that helps, solves a problem, delivers a particular type of expertise, and is a better choice because ...

This is what sets you apart, whatever those three dots represent.

Maybe you are confused about the process of creating a digital marketing strategy or some of the pillars we mentioned here today.

That's what we exist for.

We help business owners develop these seven pillars and from them create a digital marketing strategy that works specifically for them. We save them time and money by developing the steps particular to a business's area of needed growth.

Businesses aren't the same and how they attract new clients or sell their products aren't the same either.
