BIZ SPOTLIGHT - SWEEPLE CLEANING
I had the opportunity to talk with Adam and Nancy Bassett, co-founders of Sweeple Cleaning Service, about their business and how the COVID-19 Pandemic has effected them.
While some businesses are struggling, Sweeple is busier than ever.
Let’s get to know Adam and Nancy a little better.

Mitzi: Tell me about your business?
Adam & Nancy: Sweeple is a service in Birmingham that provides high-quality, trustworthy cleaning services to residents and business owners in the Metro area. Our business vision is to help our customers clean and sanitize their spaces while providing flexible, high-paying jobs to local UAB students who are experienced in cleaning.

Mitzi: How are you marking sure your employees are not infecting the homes and offices that are going into to clean?
Adam & Nancy: Prior to the stay-at-home order, our students were already wearing protective gear such as masks and gloves while cleaning. Students bring basic, necessary supplies to clean with but use the homeowners’ vacuum to cut out cross-contamination from one home to the next.
They also use either the homeowners’ mop or their own mop with a disposable head. Sweeple’s employees also sanitize doorknobs and light switches as they leave each room.
Mitzi: How are you protecting your employees?
Adam & Nancy: We are always highly protective and concerned about the health and safety of our students. On a regular day, new customers are vetted as much as possible using a 3 point security check. If they don’t pass we don’t send a student.
Our existing customers want to keep our students safe. They’re great about letting us know if they have a seasonal cold or the flu so we can cancel their cleaning.
It’s been no different with COVID-19. We’ve had two customers cancel cleanings because their spouses had been in close proximity to someone who was later diagnosed with COVID-19. They didn’t hesitate to call us and cancel.
Mitzi: Are you cleaning COVID-19 homes?
Adam & Nancy: Although our products are approved to kill COVID-19 we are not, in any circumstance, subjecting students to homes exposed to COVID-19.
Mitzi: How are you making sure your employees follow and comply with your safety procedures?
Adam & Nancy: We communicate with our students on a regular basis by phone, email, and through our app. Our app also allows us to provide checklists to our Sweeple employees for each job.
Included in each list is a reminder to not only sanitize items that we normally wouldn’t, (like tv remotes) but also requires them to check off proper procedures like wearing a face mask, gloves, and practicing physical distancing while in the home.
Automatic follow-up emails are sent to each customer requesting feedback to ensure that students are following guidelines.
Mitzi: How are you communicating your new policies and procedures to your customers and employees?
Adam & Nancy: Yes we are through phone, email, text, and our app.
FINAL THOUGHTS
Sweeple is based on a foundation of service. We go above and beyond to provide an excellent experience to our customers. Aside from attending college, I had the opportunity to instruct college students twice in my career, once at ITT Technical Institute and again at Highlands College. We understand how difficult it can be for a student to juggle studies and a job with long shifts and low pay. Nancy and I wanted to create high-paying, flexible work for students giving them time back for studies and family.
We also believe in living with purpose.
Having served in ministry for four years we felt like Sweeple was the next opportunity to live out our purpose. That purpose is to serve others. We not only provide jobs for the college workforce but we also get to know each student and provide mentorship as much as possible. High-quality service and a love for people is the heart of our company.
